A finished slide hides the part students actually need — the working out. This is the free setup I use to put my thinking on screen as it happens: iPad and Apple Pencil, Keynote, and a phone for a camera. Five short tutorials, nothing to buy.
The tools on this page are Apple tools because that is what I teach with, and the Apple Distinguished Educator community shaped how I use them. But the point was never the hardware.
An iPad does not make anyone a better teacher. What it does is let students watch you think — the crossing out, the second attempt, the moment you realise the first approach will not work. That is the part a finished slide hides, and it is the part students actually need. Everything below is free, and none of it requires the newest anything.

Students rarely struggle because they never saw the finished result. They struggle because they never saw anyone arrive at it. These three tools exist on this page for one reason — each one puts a different part of your thinking on screen while it is still happening.
Work the problem by hand, live, while the class watches. Handwriting is slow enough for students to follow and honest enough to show a wrong turn — which is usually the most useful thing that happens in the lesson.
Some things should be built ahead of time — a definition, a diagram, a derivation that is too long to write out live. Build it so it arrives one step at a time rather than appearing finished, and it still reads as thinking rather than as a conclusion.
Your phone is a better camera than any laptop webcam, and your iPad screen can be on the call without any extra hardware. This is the plumbing that makes the other two possible.
💡 Not on Apple? None of this is required. Any tablet with a stylus, any slide app, and any phone webcam app will do the same job — Studio does not care which you use. These are simply the ones on my desk.
You do not need a capture card, a green screen, or OBS. If you can open a browser tab and share your screen, you already know how to do this.
