On September 12, 2026, Dr. E spent three hours with more than 14,000 K–12 teachers at Knowledge Channel's LearnCon, most of them primary-school math teachers. The webinar, Math That Clicks: Building Foundational Numeracy through Multimedia-Enhanced Teaching Approaches, gave him the biggest live online audience of his career, and his first time teaching teachers about foundational numeracy.

Three modules, one resource person

A seminar like this is usually split among several resource persons, one for each module. Dr. E led all three. That made it one of the longest webinars he has ever given, and one of the most memorable.

The teachers are a big reason why. They were engaged from start to finish, and the Facebook Live drew more than 21,000 comments.

The three modules

  1. Understanding foundational numeracy and multimedia learning
  2. Multimedia engagement strategies for foundational numeracy
  3. Evaluating and selecting multimedia resources for effective numeracy instruction

A calculus teacher in a Grade 2 conversation

Most of Dr. E's teacher trainings are about higher math. His own courses are college level, and the teachers he usually works with teach algebra, statistics and calculus. This audience was mostly teachers of Kinder through Grade 3. One slide summed up why he wanted to be in that room.

I teach calculus. But none of my students started struggling in calculus. They started struggling in Grade 2.

The gaps that show up in a college calculus class are often years old. Para sa mga guro ng Kinder hanggang Grade 3: dito nagsisimula ang lahat. Teachers in those first years can keep students from deciding they hate math before formal learning has really begun.

Back with Knowledge Channel

The invitation was a reunion. During the pandemic, when schools across the Philippines closed and students learned from home, Dr. E hosted a weekly math show for Knowledge Channel and shared his math videos with its TV program, which brought math lessons to students in lockdown. LearnCon was a chance to work together again, this time with the teachers instead of the students.

What this session opened up

LearnCon brought Dr. E a new community: primary-school teachers he rarely gets to work with. The hope is that more students reach high school, and one day calculus, without having learned to fear math first.

Maraming salamat to Ate Michelle, who hosted the session, to the Knowledge Channel team who organized it, and to the thousands of teachers who joined. Follow Knowledge Channel on Facebook for future LearnCon sessions, or browse the rest of the archive.
